Doggie Bag Week 6 (9/29/09)

This week's skill is the Ronaldinho elastic off the BBC Soccer skills site. This is a simple fake that will get you past many defenders without turning your back on them. Don't give up on learning it till you've tried it 500 times.

The juggle of the week is inside-inside-catch. (at 1:49 into video)

Green Cards for the Capital Area Classic

It was really tough to pick out just two players this week because all
our girls really elevated their game this weekend and everyone made a
contribution to our success. So in addition to the following below,
I'm awarding a green card for the entire team.

The offensive green card of the weekend goes to Katelyn for her work
ethic the entire weekend. She also had her first goal with our team in
game 2. She just kept running and working on both sides of the ball.
Nice work, Katelyn.

The defensive green card of the week end goes to Bianca. She literally
shed blood to make a save and played well in goal and as sweeper,
stopping many attacks with her speed and determined play. Bianca plays
smart and makes good decisions with and without the ball.

Well done ladies.

The Renaldo Chop

The Renaldo Chop is a simple move, that I hope all of us can learn. Watch the video a few times, try the move, watch some more, try some more in while moving forward and against an opponent. I think you'll get this one pretty quickly.

OCTOBER 5TH Meet the Team Event, BBQ, And Training Session

Players and Parents,

Your invited to the Fall Meet the Team Event on Monday, October 5th at the HHS Soccer Field for all USSF and ESSL teams, and parents.  The BBQ will start around 5:15 pm and will continue for an hour or so.  The Varsity game will begin at 5:30 pm.  Each player will sign in as the team with the highest percentage of players in attendance will have a practice with the Boys Varsity Team.  Players are to wear jerseys and get in free, and will be introduced by their coach or representative at half time for applause and thanks.  After the Varsity game, there will be small-sided games and drills for players run by the Varsity Team.

Put this date in your calendar. The Haslett Varsity squad has skill players in every position, so watching them is fun and educational.

BBC Football Training site

The BBC has a Football training section with quality videos that will help you learn some sweet soccer moves. I will be posting individual posts later, but for now I encourage you to explore the site, find a move you want to learn and demonstrate it at practice.

The Offside Rule Explained

The FIFA web site explains the Offside rule in great detail (here) with images showing all of the details of how the Offside rule is applied in different situations.

If you watch the first few minutes, you'll get the basics, but, if you watch the entire presentation, you'll better understand how when the call is made, know how to play to take advantage of the rule, and you'll know more about the Offside rule than 98% of girls your age. (But don't keep this secret to yourself. Share it with your soccer loving friends.)

Thank you to to Ben Hazankani, Mason U-12 Girls Head Coach, for telling me about this site.

Week 5 Doggie Bag (9/22/09)

The skill of the week is the Outside Cut ( at 0:59 into the video). This is a good movie to create an opening to shoot or penetrate.

Our Juggle of the Week is to kick above your head & catch (1:52 in) alternating left and right.

Watching Soccer

One important ingredient in growing as a soccer player is learning from those who have more experience than you. You can do this by playing against older or more skilled players, and by watching soccer. If any of you find any inspiring web video to share with the team, please forward the links and I will post them here.

The 2008 Summer Olympics Women's Gold Medal match (USA v. Brazil) is available on-line here. The U.S. women were playing without Abby Wambach, a star forward.

The game features some great players, playing some great offense and defense. The Brazilians have a tradition of playing strong offense. Watch how their offensive players can create opportunities with their feet. Watch for Marta, she has some impressive skills and even beats 3 defenders at once.

The Americans play a smart game with persistent defense and patience. Though the opponent attacks very well, they find a way to contain them.

Enjoy!

Week 4 Doggie Bag (9/15/09)

The juggle of the week is thigh catch ladder. (at 2:00 in the video)
Alternating left and right and increasing the number of touches before catching each time.

Be sure to track how many you're doing on your chart and also try for new maximum juggles.

The skill of for last week, the shimmy or juke, is in this video: (at 1:00 in the video)

The skill we covered this week is called the hook turn and is at 1:18 into the video below.

Welcome.

If you'd like to be notified whenever there is an update to this site, you can subscribe to our RSS feed. If you have no idea what I'm talking about and that doesn't bother you, move along. Nothing to see here. If your happy receiving e-mails, and that's working fine for you, it is not necessary to subscribe to the RSS feed.

It's my hope that this site will provide our players easier access to the videos we e-mail out to parents each week, and will help our players grow in their abilities and their love of the game.

Each update will appear at the top of this site and older posts will be down the page. I will also categorize posts so you can go right the content you're after. If you have any feedback on how to make the site or anything about our team for that matter work better, please chime in.
